National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: Leukemia Ball

The Leukemia Ball reigns as the Washington, DC area’s largest non-political black tie fundraiser, raising more than $3 million annually for the National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Hargrove has been the staging and décor partner since the 1990s.

The Ball’s overwhelming success is due to a winning event strategy put in place by an accomplished executive committee and event production team. The team brings together a well-crafted messaging platform, A-list entertainment and a stunning décor program designed by Hargrove. The resulting event proves to be a huge draw for both attendees and corporate sponsors from year to year.

The 2009 design concept was inspired by urban outdoor and hotel spaces in both Washington, DC and New York City in order to achieve a contemporary and elegant atmosphere. The decor created a hard-to-achieve intimacy inside this large, modern facility.

The dramatic transformation of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center’s common areas featured a 13-foot arched, illuminated colonnade that welcomed guests into the pre-function areas. The destination ballroom was similarly transformed, with abstract, organic forms of varied translucency and theatrical lighting. The ethereal effect echoed metaphors for renewal and optimism.

“I think the thing that sets Hargrove apart is consistency of staff. To be able to trust and work with people year over year builds a feeling of confidence.  And, Hargrove continues to create the wow factor for our guests.” Gabrielle Urquhart, National Capital Area Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
